This October, in recognition of Riparian Buffer Month, the Town Run Watershed Group partnered with the Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church to complete a native seedling installation at Morgan’s Grove Park. The project was made possible through a generous donation from the church’s Earth Care Team and the support of community volunteers.
Restoration leader and Steering Committee member Peggy Bowers collaborated with Emily Gross, Earth Care Team leader at Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, to select native species well-suited for improving bank stability and enhancing habitat along Town Run. Their thoughtful planning ensured the planting would provide long-term ecological benefits, including erosion control, improved water quality, and increased biodiversity.
On October 18th, volunteers from both groups worked together to install 150 native seedlings. The planting included Juncus effusus, Iris versicolor, Chelone glabra, and six buttonbush shrubs, all species known for their ability to outcompete invasives, support pollinators, and thrive in wetland areas.
This collaborative effort represents the type of community-driven restoration that strengthens Town Run for years to come. Our thanks go to Peggy for her leadership and to all the volunteers who contributed time, energy, and enthusiasm to this project.
