SUMMARY:Risks and Resiliencies for Water Security in Town Run
DESCRIPTION:The Town Run Watershed Association is excited to announce a special presentation titled “Risks and Resiliencies for Water Security in Town Run” on Thursday\, October 10th at 7:00 PM at the Byrd Center\, Shepherd University. This timely program will address the critical role of Town Run in Shepherdstown’s future water supply and the challenges it faces.  Dr. Nathaniel “Than” Hitt\, Senior Scientist with the West Virginia Rivers Coalition\, will explore how karst geology\, a defining feature of the local landscape\, impacts Town Run and other municipal water supplies across the region. He will also discuss the potential effects of climate change and land use on water security and highlight key areas where further research is needed. \nWith Shepherdstown preparing to blend water from Town Run with the Potomac River as its primary drinking water source\, understanding the risks and resiliencies involved is more crucial than ever.Attendees will gain insights into the evolving challenges of water resource management and learn how citizen participation can play a vital role in safeguarding the future of the Town Run watershed. \nNathaniel “Than” Hitt brings over 15 years of experience in fisheries\, water quality\, and climate science. He is the Senior Scientist at the West Virginia Rivers Coalition\, where he focuses on ensuring the protection of vital waterways throughout the state. Dr. Hitt has a BA from the College of Wooster\, an MS from the University of Montana\, and a PhD from Virginia Tech. Prior to his current role\, he served as a Research Fish Biologist with the US Geological Survey from 2009 to 2024. His extensive research on water security and his passion for community-driven conservation efforts make him an engaging and informative speaker. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Residents\, students\, and anyone interested in the future of water security are encouraged to attend. \nTo learn more about Dr. Hitt’s work\, please visit https://wvrivers.org.

SUMMARY:Free Homeowner Septic Class on October 5th: Protect Property\, Your Water\, and the Town Run Watershed
DESCRIPTION:The Town Run Watershed Association invites Shepherdstown and Jefferson County residents and homeowners to attend a Free Homeowner Septic Class on Saturday\, October 5th\, from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM\, at the Shepherdstown Public Library\, 145 Higbee Lane\, Shepherdstown. \nThis informative session follows the nationwide SepticSmart Week to bring attention to the importance of caring for and maintaining septic systems in order to protect property\, local water systems\, and the health of the Town Run. Participants will also receive information about accessing special grants to cover up to $150 of the cost of a septic pump out. \nSeptic systems\, or on-site wastewater treatment systems\, are designed to manage wastewater from homes or properties that are not connected to a public sewer system. Approximately one in five households in the United States depend on septic systems to treat their wastewater. Malfunctioning septic systems can leach contaminated wastewater into yards\, neighborhoods\, streams and drinking water sources. \nThe workshop will include:\nWelcome and Introduction to the Town Run Watershed\nKay Schultz\, member of the Town Run Watershed Steering Committee\, will open the class with an overview of the Town Run Watershed’s current state and the critical steps needed to protect and restore it. Attendees will learn about the importance of Town Run as a future drinking water source\, the threats facing its health\, and how to become a “Friend” of Town Run to support ongoing conservation efforts. \nWell Water to Your Septic Field: An Overview of Septic Systems\nAlexis L. Davy\, Director of Environmental Health for Jefferson County\, will provide a comprehensive overview of septic systems and how they function. She will cover why caring and maintaining a septic system is crucial\, what causes systems to fail\, and essential tips for ensuring the long-term health of a septic system. \nCost-Share Programs for Jefferson County Residents\nKristen Bisom from the West Virginia Conservation Agency will introduce available cost-share programs for residents in Jefferson County. These programs offer homeowners up to $150 for septic pump outs and maintenance efforts. \nThis event provides a unique opportunity for long-time and new homeowners to learn about protecting drinking water\, maintaining septic systems\, reducing costs\, and appreciating Town Run and the broader environment.

SUMMARY:Homeowner Septic Class 10/2024
DESCRIPTION:The Town Run Watershed Association invited Shepherdstown and Jefferson County residents and homeowners to attend a Free Homeowner Septic Class on Saturday\, October 5th\, 2024. \n\n\nThis informative session followed the nationwide SepticSmart Week to bring attention to the importance of caring for and maintaining septic systems in order to protect property\, local water systems\, and the health of the Town Run. Participants  received information about accessing special grants to cover up to $150 of the cost of a septic pump out. \n\n\n\nSeptic systems\, or on-site wastewater treatment systems\, are designed to manage wastewater from homes or properties that are not connected to a public sewer system. Approximately one in five households in the United States depend on septic systems to treat their wastewater. Malfunctioning septic systems can leach contaminated wastewater into yards\, neighborhoods\, streams and drinking water sources.\n\nThe workshop included:\nWelcome and Introduction to the Town Run Watershed\nKay Schultz\, member of the Town Run Watershed Steering Committee\,  opened the class with an overview of the Town Run Watershed’s current state and the critical steps needed to protect and restore it. Attendees  learned about the importance of Town Run as a future drinking water source\, the threats facing its health\, and how to become a “Friend” of Town Run to support ongoing conservation efforts. \nWell Water to Your Septic Field: An Overview of Septic Systems\nAlexis L. Davy\, Director of Environmental Health for Jefferson County\,  provided a comprehensive overview of septic systems and how they function. She covered why caring and maintaining a septic system is crucial\, what causes systems to fail\, and essential tips for ensuring the long-term health of a septic system. \nCost-Share Programs for Jefferson County Residents\nKristen Bisom from the West Virginia Conservation Agency introduced available cost-share programs for residents in Jefferson County. These programs offer homeowners up to $150 for septic pump outs and maintenance efforts. \nThis event provided a unique opportunity for long-time and new homeowners to learn about protecting drinking water\, maintaining septic systems\, reducing costs\, and appreciating Town Run and the broader environment.

SUMMARY:Town Run Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Looking for an opportunity to help protect Shepherdstown’s future drinking water source\, hang out with great people\, AND get free pizza?? Then mark your calendars for SATURDAY April 6th\, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm\, meeting at the pavilion at Morgan’s Grove Park. \n\nWe are hosting a Town Run cleanup under the auspices of the Alice Ferguson Foundation and WV Make it Shine. Clean-up will take place both on the banks of Town Run and in the water – you choose what you want to do and where you want to be! \nIf we have enough volunteers\, we will be at three spots – (1) at Morgan’s Grove Park; (2) behind the Shepherdstown Post Office & Jefferson Security Bank; (3) and at the mouth of the Run where it enters the Potomac\, at the termination of North Princess Street. \nBut everyone meets at the pavilion to get your trash bags\, gloves and grabbers – provided by WV DEP & AFF- who will also haul away the trash (yay WV DEP!) And the Corporation of Shepherdstown has offered to help with that part too! \nIf you plan on going in the water\, please bring your own waders. \nIf you are willing to dig up invasives\, please bring your own tools!  And of course\, bring friends\, family and smiles!!   This cleanup is happening rain or shine (fully confident it will dawn a beautiful day!)  Questions?
